Benefits of a Fabric Specialist

Regardless of the fiber, weave, construction, or type of fabric protectant that is applied, soil will inevitability accumulate on your furniture's upholstery. Bacteria from the decomposition of body oils, perspiration, and food can permanently damage or discolor the fabric. The sooner a stain is addressed, the better the chances are for a successful removal of the stain from your favorite Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware slipcovers. Our IICRC Upholstery and Fabric Cleaning Technician (UFT) certified cleaning specialists make it easy to maintain and control odors and unnecessary staining.

Maintaining Your Fine Fabrics

Nearly 80% of soils on upholstered furniture are insoluble, which means that they do not dissolve in water or solvents. The reason that fabrics, especially pile fabrics, have so much dry particulate soil - is because furniture fabric is rarely vacuumed. Keeping your fabric clean will lengthen the life of your fabric upholstered furniture. Normal cleaning would encompass periodic cleaning (12-24 months) done by a trained technician. In between professional cleanings, we recommend vacuuming (every 2-6 weeks) of all upholstered surfaces to prevent dust and damaging soil build-up.

Choosing The Right Professional Cleaner

It is very common for carpet cleaners to refuse upholstery cleaning due to a lack of experience and knowledge. Your average carpet cleaning company loves empty houses and large commercial jobs that they can simply hire a low wage employee to perform easy and simple tasks. The risks of using an inexperienced cleaning company for your upholstery fabrics are possible browning, bleeding, shrinkage, and color loss. Upholstery cleaning is very tedious and fatiguing. Endurance in the technician’s shoulders and back will ensure that the cleaning process maintains its quality from beginning to end. Being able to identify fabrics and cleaning methods require much more expertise and knowledge.

6 Step Cleaning Process

Step 1: Inspection

A thorough pre-inspection is the most critical step in upholstery cleaning. It's not just about looking for dirt; it's about identifying the "DNA" of the furniture to ensure the cleaning is both safe and effective.

- Fiber Identification

- Physical Condition Assessment

- Dye Stability & Colorfastness

- Soil & Stain Categorization

Step 2: Cushion Cover Adjustment

Adjusting and aligning cushion covers before the cleaning process is a small step that prevents permanent, costly mistakes. In the industry, we often call this "setting the seams."

- Square the Corners: Massage the cushion stuffing/foam into the corners of the covers.

- Level the Welting: Ensure the decorative piping runs in a straight line along the edges.

-Hand Grooming: Smooth out any pre-existing wrinkles.

Step 3: Stain & Odor Pre-Treatment

Pretreating stains and odors are the difference between a "surface clean" and a professional-grade restoration. In the industry, we rely on the S.C.A.T. principle (Surface Tension, Chemistry, Agitation, and Time) to get the job done correctly.

- Stain Specific Chemical Application

- Chemical Dwell Time

- Agitate to break surface tension

Step 4: Hot Water Extraction

Often referred to as "Steam Cleaning," Hot Water Extraction (HWE) is widely considered the gold standard for deep-cleaning upholstery. Despite the name, it's not actually the steam doing the work - it's the precise combination of heat, pressure, and high-volume suction.

Step 5: Fabric Grooming

Grooming is the "finishing touch" that separates a DIY job from a professional restoration. While it may look like you're just combing the sofa, it serves several vital technical and aesthetic purposes.

- Setting the fabric "Nap" or "Pile"

- Accelerating Dry Times

- Preventing Texture Distortions

Step 6: Final Inspection

The Final Inspection is the "quality control" phase of the job. It is our opportunity to demonstrate the value to the client, ensure the furniture is safe to use, and confirm that the cleaning met professional standards.

- The Visual Sweep (Lighting is Everything)

- The Touch Test (Moisture Level)

- The Scent Check

- Client Walk-Through
